According to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam declared a State of Emergency to help local and state agencies with their response to damage from Sunday's severe weather.

Tornadoes and high winds caused plenty of destruction in several areas of Central Virginia on Sunday night, April 15 after 7:00 p.m.

Among the hardest hit areas were Timberlake Road in Lynchburg and the town of Elon in Amherst County. Reports from Amherst County indicate that 20-25 homes were seriously damaged or destroyed in Elon.

There were no reported casualties as a result of the storms, but the Virginia State Police said that minor injuries were sustained and several people were sent to the hospital.

Various shelters were opened for victims, including the Salvation Army and Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg and the Monelison Middle School in Madison Heights.

Cleanup efforts and damage assessments are ongoing.
