Charles Harmon Meadows
Charles Harmon Meadows, 92, of Willowton died Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, VA.
Born February 14, 1921 in Princeton he was the son of the late Hiram Meadows and Bessie Mae Clark Meadows. He was a 1941 graduate of Princeton High School and worked at the railroad for a short time after graduation. Charles joined the Navy in 1941 and retired as a Chief Petty Officer with twenty years service from 1941-1961. He then joined the National Park Service serving as an officer at the Appomattox, VA Park with twenty years service. Charles was a member of the Appomattox, VA American Legion Post #404 and lived in the Appomattox area for many years before retiring and returning to the Willowton-Princeton area in December 2011.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Peter Alan Meadows, in 1991, two brothers, Marvin Meadows and Curtis Meadows; and one sister, Lilah Burgess. Survivors include his wife, JoAnne Meadows of Willowton; one son, Roger Charles Meadows of Sebring, FL; one daughter-in-law, Sunny Meadows of Appomattox, VA; five grandchildren, Chris Meadows and wife Amanda of Savannah, GA, Delbert Meadows of Appomattox, VA, Samantha Meadows of Richmond, VA, Angie Garrett and husband Matt of Appomattox, VA, and Megan Meadows of Lynchburg, VA; three great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mary Billos and husband Leon of Rich Creek, VA, Leona Meadows and Frances Meadows both of Willowton; and two brothers-in-law, Tommy Meadows and wife Shirley of Willowton and Newton Meadows and wife Ina of Knoxville, TN.
In keeping with Charles’ wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Willowton Christian Church in Willowton, WV with Mike Robertson, Pastor of Willowton Christian Church officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council.
Friends may call at the church from 12:00 Noon until the service hour on Saturday. Fredeking Funeral Service in Oakvale is serving the Meadows.
