In this week’s column, I will begin a debate regarding the possibility of locating a welcome center in the American Civil War Museum (ACWM). Please refer to last week’s edition of this paper for a story introducing the proposal. A lot of questions come to mind.

Would the welcome center be in addition to or would it replace the Visitors Center located in the old depot on Main Street? Would the welcome center hosts be employees of the town, the museum or shared in some manner? If the downtown center is eliminated, would the former depot then be converted into something that would be a draw to Main Street (I know that some studies have been done)? Would the expense of implementing these changes result in sufficiently increased revenue to make such an investment worthwhile? Would downtown traffic decrease or increase from this new approach?
