Turkeys, ham, all the trimmings and enthusiastic 4-H’ers? Wow, now that is a Christmas dinner!
The Appomattox 4-H Shooting Education Club held its year-end awards dinner recently. Members and parents attended the covered dish supper, followed by an awards presentation and then the white elephant gift activity.
This club has been in existence since 1988 and is very active. It is open to all youth ages 9-19, and experience or equipment is not required. Many of the parents are actively involved, and some have taken advantage of training opportunities available to become a certified instructor.
During the year as the members shoot the different disciplines, their scores are updated for the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program. This program provides patches and incentive awards for developing and improving marksmanship skills. Performance is measured against established par scores and any shooter who meets or exceeds those scores is entitled to the corresponding recognitions awards for that rating.
The program is designed to take shooters from beginning skill levels (Pro-Marksman and Marksman) through intermediate levels (Marksman 1st Class, Sharpshooter, and Expert) up to the nationally recognized skill level – Distinguished Expert, the pinnacle of the program. The club presently has over 40 Distinguished Experts.
The Distinguished Experts recognized at this year’s banquet were Brianna Goin and Charlie Maddox for Rifle-Four Position BB.
