Happiness is 4-H

Appomattox County 4-H will again be offering after-school and specialty clubs as well as events during the year, for youth to participate in. Listed below are the programs in place, there will also be announcements of possible new clubs forming, as well as other upcoming events.

Appomattox 4-H Shooting Education Club — This club meets on various days including Sunday afternoons. Members learn safe firearm handling and proper shooting techniques. Disciplines include: BB, air rifle, air pistol, archery, muzzleloader, .22, and shotgun. Please call the Extension Office at 352-8244 if you are interested.

Fun With Foods — This after-school program is for those who enjoy cooking, and would like to learn some new skills. Open to ages 9-13, meetings will be held on the second Thursday of the month, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The classes will end in May. The cost for this program is $7/class, to cover food and cooking item expenses. Please call the Extension Office to register.

Appomattox 4-H Livestock Club — Youth in this club will learn about: Animal husbandry, Livestock Production (for meat and other uses), as well as have some field trips, guest speakers, and could participate in some shows. Please give the Extension Office a call at 352-8244. This club is for ages 9 and up, and they do not have to own an animal. This club meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month, with extra dates TBA. Please call the Extension Office at 352-8244 if you are interested.

Appomattox 4-H Handbell Club — If your child loves music, and being part of a dynamic team, then this club is for them! Members in this club will learn how to read music and play handbells. There will be a minimum of two public performances. This club meets Mondays, afterschool, at Appomattox Courthouse Presbyterian Church (behind AMS). Youth must be at least in the fourth grade. Appomattox 4-H Horse & Pony Club — Open to ages 9 and up. This is an active club that learns about care, riding and showing of horses. Club meets monthly on different dates. Please call the Extension Office at 352-8244 for more information.

4-H is an informal, practical, learn-by-doing, fun and educational program for boys and girls, ages 8 through 18, from all racial, cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. Membership is open to all youth in this age range without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, gender or religious affiliation. The mission of 4-H is to assist youth and adults working with those youth to gain additional knowledge, life skills, and attitudes that will further their development as self-directing, contributing and productive members of society.
