Friday night was Senior Night for Appomattox County boys basketball and the cheerleading squad. The Raider seniors closed out their regular season home court careers in style with a decisive 69-43 win over the Nelson County Governors.
Appomattox shot out to an 11-2 lead on the back of Casey Scruggs, who tallied seven of those points on an opening 3-pointer and two layups downcourt on the receiving end of passes following Nelson County turnovers. Scruggs was the game's top scorer with 27 points.
The Governors, without star player Brice Wilson, cut into what was a 21-11 Raiders lead to come within five points at 23-18 on a long jump shot by Blayz McGarry.
After George Brown of Nelson County put in a layup on an inbound pass to stay within five at 27-22, the Raiders ended the first half with eight unanswered points, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Jordan Scott and buzzer-beating fall-away jumper by Scruggs.
Appomattox improves to 12-7 with one regular season game to play Tuesday at Gretna. Nelson County concludes their regular season at 10-12.
