Over the weekend, the Virginia Commonwealth Games were held at Liberty University and other sports venues around the Lynchburg area. A member of the Appomattox County High School Raiders athletics program came home with a gold medal in her sport.
Madison Shirey, a varsity member of the Raiders volleyball team, won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games' beach volleyball competition. Shirey teamed up with Erin Johnson of E.C. Glass to win gold in the Junior 16U Division.
The Games were held in accordance with COVID-19 Phase 3 guidelines mandated by state officials as explained in a July 16 press conference at Liberty University.
