When the Appomattox County boys basketball team lost a Feb. 8 home game to Nelson County, some of the visiting team's fans rained down chants of "over-rated" over the Raiders.
Tonight, in a rematch to open the VHSL Class 2C Regional tournament, Appomattox answered with a 72-55 win over the Governors, leaving no room for a similar chorus.
Nelson County came within single digits of Appomattox a few times in the first half but were never a real threat to the Raiders, who built a 20-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
Three Raiders scored in double digits. Tyler Gilliam led with 23 , followed by Tevin Hurt with 18 and Casey Scruggs with 17.
Appomattox (10-13) will travel to Dan River (16-6) Tuesday night for the Eastern division second round. Dan River was the 2018-19 Dogwood District champion and split two games against the Raiders.
