The Appomattox Raiders boys varsity basketball team overcame an early 17-4 deficit to force the Gretna Hawks to fight until the last shot.
Down 59-57 with just seconds to play, Casey Scruggs raced down the right side of the court off an inbound pass and heaved up an off-balanced shot that sailed wide of the hoop.
Moments earlier, Scruggs nailed a 3-pointer to get the Raiders within one point at 58-57 with less than 30 seconds on the clock. Gretna followed with a free throw for the final two-point lead.
Appomattox (5-6) will play at Nelson County on Jan. 15 and at Dan River on Jan. 18.
