Appomattox players Alie Carrico (#11) and Josey Walton (#5) go for a ball against Gretna.

The Appomattox Raiders undefeated record came to an end Friday night on their home court as the Gretna Hawks swept the game in three sets (28-7, 25-22, 25-16) to win the Dogwood District Championship.

Appomattox (20-1) had defeated Gretna in both regular season matches this year, including a 3-2 win after trailing 2-0 in sets in late September.

But the Raiders, who were without senior starter Sakyra Abbitt due to a concussion, were unable to repeat their September magic and fell short of a second comeback.

The season is not over, however, because Appomattox will host a VHSL Region 2C Tournament game Tuesday night. They will play the winner of Monday's opening round Chatham vs. Dan River match.

Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Appomattox County High School.
