On Friday, June 14, Appomattox For Equality (AFE) held its fifth annual Juneteenth celebration at the Carver Price Cultural Center from 5 to 9 p.m.
Juneteenth is an annual celebration of the abolition of slavery in the United States, especially important to Appomattox due to its strong ties to the end of the Civil War. Appomattox For Equality began to host the annual Appomattox Juneteenth celebration in 2020, following the protests for civil rights that emerged following the death of George Floyd.
“Someone said, since we were kind of a byproduct of the peaceful protest of June 8th, 2020, that we should host a Juneteenth celebration,” said Joetricia Humbles, lead agent of AFE. “Since then, we’ve done one every year.”
Humbles emphasized the importance of AFE’s collaboration with the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.
