Congressman Bob Good, who represents Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Appomattox County, announced following the mid-term elections that he will not be supporting Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-21) for speaker of the House.
Since that time, Good has amassed a growing number of Republican representatives who will not vote for McCarthy, making it unlikely that the minority leader will ascend to the role of speaker in January.
House Republicans voted for McCarthy as their nominee for speaker of the House once they regained the majority in the House, but he will have to get through a vote from the entire House to approve him. He will need 218 votes to secure the appointment, but Good reports that there are enough Republicans who will vote against McCarthy’s appointment so that he will be unable to acquire the necessary votes.
