Casey Howard Clabough

Casey Howard Clabough of Crozier, VA, died on January 1, 2023. He was born in Richmond, VA, January 31, 1974, the beloved son of Howard and Jeanne Clabough of Appomattox, VA, and brother and best friend of Seth Clabough of Crozet ,VA.

He was a graduate of ACHS and Central VA Governor’s School and the College of William & Mary, and received his MA and PhD degrees from the University of South Carolina. He taught at Lynchburg University from 2001- 2016 where he was a tenured full professor, English Graduate Program Director, and served a rotation as English Department Chair.

He is the author of over a dozen books, with three in-progress at the time of his death, and over 100 published essays, articles, reviews, and poetry. He served as Literature Editor for Encyclopedia Virginia and Series Editor for “Best Creative Nonfiction of the South” and gave over eighty invited lectures, readings, and conference presentations.

He is survived by his parents, his brother, two nephews and two nieces, many friends and students, and his dog. Per his wishes the family will not hold a service but will gather to spread his ashes on Hatteras Island where he felt the most at peace after being diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2016. Despite this mental illness, he meticulously cared for his home, his vegetable and flower gardens, his animals, people he perceived to be in need, and himself while continuing to research the literature on schizophrenia and to write. The family wishes to thank the countless people from many walks of life who understood Casey’s condition and went far beyond duty to assist him and us.

Contributions in his memory can be made to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), an organization to which Casey belonged and which he thought very highly of, or to an animal rescue organization of your choice.
