A new program “Athlete of the Month” from Appomattox Youth Sports recognizes one current or former AYS athlete per month for their accomplishments.

The award is in honor of lifetime supporter, father, grandfather, role model, Wahoo and friend Curtis Mayberry.

The first award was given to Appomattox County High School softball standout Courtney Layne.

Layne played AYS softball and is currently one of the top high school pitchers in the country. She is a senior and will take her skills to the University of Virginia next fall.
