Glassware and a menu in the dining room of the Babcock House on Oakleigh Avenue in Appomattox.

The long-time inn known as the Babcock House in Appomattox has been around since 1884 and was sold to H.C. Babcock in 1908.

One-hundred-twelve-years later, the house still stands as a five-bedroom and one-suite bed and breakfast with a 58-seat dining area.

Like many small businesses, the Babcock House has had to make adjustments in adherence to Gov. Ralph Northam’s mandates in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic that has afflicted many nations around the world.

Currently, the Babcock House is offering takeout orders for lunch, supper and Sunday brunch. Eating in the dining room is limited to boarders, of which are generally only one or two at a time.

Lunch hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and sandwiches, soups and salads are offered.

Supper hours are 5-8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Offered is a family-style to-go meal with four adult servings of a choice of six different entrees that come with salad, cornbread and dessert. Wine and beer are discounted at one-half off for a to-go order.

Those ordering takeout suppers are asked to call at least an hour in advance. There are some nights that meal supplies are sold out by 6:30 p.m., but co-owner Talia Clusman said the restaurant is doing its best to keep supplies stocked during the government lockdown.

Sunday brunch meals are ready for takeout at 2 p.m.
