The Appomattox branch of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into multiple shootings Sunday in which one woman was fatally shot, and a suspect who fled died after a shootout that injured a deputy.

According to the Virginia State Police, a deputy from the Amherst County was shot by Anthony M. Hutchinson, 40, of Waynesboro, Virginia, on Route 29 after deputies engaged the driver suspected in the shooting death of Alexia S. Lockett, 29, of Afton, Virginia.

The deputies returned fire, and Hutchinson was pronounced dead following the incident. The deputy who was shot was treated for a non-life threatening injury.

According to the investigation, Alexia S. Lockett, 29, of Afton, Va. was found dead shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday in a residence on the 1700 block of Avon Road in Afton. The Nelson County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police responded, and her remains were transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond for an autopsy and examination.

Hutchinson allegedly shot Lockett and fled the scene. He was driving a 2014 Nissan Altima and was found traveling south on Route 29 in Amherst County.

A deputy with the Amherst County Sheriff's Office attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, but when his emergency equipment was activated, the Nissan “sped away and continued south at a high rate of speed on Route 29,” according to Virginia State Police.

The vehicle wrecked on the left side of the road as it approached Spencer Mountain Road.

Deputies exited their vehicles, and Hutchinsonbegan shooting at them from within the vehicle, resulting one deputy being shot, according to the investigation.The deputies returned fire and hit Hutchinson, who died at the scene.

After the incident, authorities were on the scene investigating, and citizens were asked to avoid Route 29 north of Route 151.

Per the policy of Amherst County, three deputies were placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
