Kenneth Edward “Red” Coleman

Kenneth Edward “Red” Coleman, 93, of Cone Street, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2021 at his residence.  He was the loving husband of Dorothy “Dot” Johnson Coleman for 72 years.

Born in Appomattox County, February 24, 1927, he was a son of the late Mary Eva Martin and Royal Judson Coleman.  He was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran having served from May 1945 - December 1946, with the 88th infantry division in Italy.  Mr. Coleman was Co-Owner of Bailey Spencer Hardware at the time of his retirement.  He began his career with the hardware by sweeping the floors but through hard work and dedication he rose to an ownership position. Red loved his family and community. Red believed in being a good neighbor to all and he had a favorite quote which he shared often “Never ball your fist at your fellow man, always open it for a helping hand.”

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Kenneth H. “Pete” Coleman and wife, Marie P. of Fairfield; three grandchildren, Anna Campbell and husband Cory, Carter Coleman and wife, Danielle and David Buskey and wife, Jamie; four great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Kenna, Obi and Clementine; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas H. Coleman, R. Martin Coleman, J. Ralph Coleman and A. Harwood “Doc” Coleman; four sisters, Elizabeth Reynolds, Alice Martin, Gladys Coleman and Polly Inge.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Rebecca Cemetery with Rev. John Flood officiating.
