Liberty University hosted what is being called the biggest home game in the history of its football program on Saturday when the Brigham Young Cougars came to Lynchburg to take on the Flames.
Liberty entered the game as a seven-point underdog but surprised the oddsmakers and many others with a 41-14 win after falling behind 14-3 in the first quarter.
Liberty’s late founder Jerry Falwell, Sr. often spoke of his grand vision for the university, which among the academic and spiritual aspects, also included high goals for the athletic program. He envisioned a day when Liberty would become a school for evangelical Christians in the manner that Notre Dame is for Catholics and Brigham Young is for Mormons.
Three graduates of Appomattox County High School (ACHS) took part in Liberty’s historic game: senior starting safety Javon Scruggs, freshman cheerleader Lauren Weakley and freshman backup safety Tre Lawing.
