The Appomattox Raiders girls soccer team has produced a strong showing through its first three games of the 2023 season, recording a March 14 win at Halifax (4-0), a March 17 win at Mecklenburg (4-1) and a March 21 win over Halifax (9-2) in the home opener.
The Halifax Comets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on March 21 when Fan Yang scored on a high-arching free kick nearly 10 minutes into the match.
The Raiders, rather than faltering, came back with a flurry of goals in the final 20 minutes of the first half to take a 4-1 lead.
Alexa McNamara led a fast break charge down the middle of the field and pushed the ball to Lyndsey Lawson, who put it into the lower left corner of the net for a 1-1 tie around the 19:10 mark. It was the first of Lawson’s five goals on the night.
