Appomattox Raiders senior wrestler Frank Gonzin concluded the 2022-23 with a strong showing, finishing second in the Class 2 138-pound division at last weekend’s VSHL Class 1, 2 and 3 State Wresting Championships held at the Salem Civic Center. Matches were held Friday and Saturday.

Gonzin qualified for a first round bye. In the quarterfinal match, he won by a 6-2 decision over Tim Kartyshev of East Rockingham.

In the semifinal round, Gonzin also won by decision, 2-1, over William Ayala of Central Woodstock.

Gonzin squared off against Ethan Asher of Strasburg in the championship round but lost by a fall at the 2:25 mark.
