At the Appomattox County Board of Supervisors meeting Jan. 17, the board unanimously adopted an ordinance amendment to exempt legitimate “farm use” vehicles from personal property taxes.
Beginning July 1, vehicle owners may not simply place a “farm use” tag on their vehicle and operate it on the highway without going to the DMV, according to new law enacted by the Virginia General Assembly in 2022.
In order for Appomattox County citizens to avoid mistakenly being assessed a personal property tax by the county, the board of supervisors ensured that won’t happen by amending subsection A (8) to County Code Chapter 3.7-2, adding that the exemption applies to “motor vehicles that are primarily used for agricultural purposes, for which the owner is not required to obtain a registration certificate, license plate, and decal or pay a registration fee.”
