County native Priscilla Abbitt 101 years old

Mrs. Priscilla Abbitt, an Appomattox County native residing with a daughter and son in Washington, D.C., is 101 years old. She was born Dec. 25, 1865, to Eliza Baldwin in Evergreen. She married young and had 12 children, plus one foster son. She loves television, likes to attend wrestling matches, and said to one visitor, “I can stay up as late as you can.”

Train hits truck near Paradise Lake

As the weekly Saturday night country and western dance ended at Paradise Lake, a Ford pickup truck driven by Lynchburg man Roger Craig Richards, his two sons and two friends was struck in the tail end by a west-bound train while crossing the tracks before entering Route 460. All occupants were thrown from the truck, and several sustained serious injuries.

Jamerson and Son to build Patrick Henry addition

The Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation announced plans to construct an addition to the Pratt Administration Building. The addition was to be constructed by J.E. Jamerson and Son, of Appomattox, at a projected cost of around $135,000.

Krug named new school district superintendent

The Appomattox County School Board selected Dr. Walter Krug as the new school district superintendent. Krug previously led a 1,000-student kindergarten through eighth grade division in Absecon, N.J.

Galilee Baptist celebrates 130 years

Galilee Baptist Church, the first black church in Appomattox, celebrated its 130th anniversary with a special day-long service featuring the dynamic speaker Dr. Harold A. Carter, pastor of The New Shiloh Baptist Church in Baltimore, Md.

Appomattox Healthcare Center gets national award

Appomattox Healthcare Center’s Director of Nursing, Justine A. Young, accepted a national award for excellence in long-term service on behalf of the center at the National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration Conference at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn.

Sheriff’s Department buys 19 tasers

The Appomattox County Sheriff’s Department purchased 19 tasers that can shoot electric rods up to 25 feet. Appomattox Sheriff Wilson Staples said the new tasers will greatly assist officers as they face potentially dangerous situations.

Mayor named to steering committee

Appomattox Mayor John Wilson was selected to take part in assisting with statewide policy decisions as a member of the 2007 Virginia Municipal League’s General Laws Steering Committee.

Concord postmaster retires

Charlotte Bryant retired as the Concord postmaster, ending a 39-year career with the United States Postal Service. She had worked at several area locations and was a clerk in Concord for 14 years before becoming postmaster in 2000.

Children find West Virginia balloon in Appomattox

Local children Jackson, Josie and Alice Stanley, and Connor, Rylee and Madison Stratton found a ballon from West Virginia at their grandparents’ home on Red House Road. The balloon traveled from Ripley, W.V., with an attached piece of paper that read, “Congratulations! You have found one of over 400 balloons launched from Jackson County All-Age 4-H Camp in Ripley, WV on June 23, 2012.” The paper stated the purpose was to generate a scholarship fund used to send one or more campers to the 2013 camp, and encouraged the finder to send a small donation.

ACHS track coach finishes career

Appomattox County High School track and field coach Tony Franklin finished his career at the team’s 2017 awards banquet. Under Franklin’s leadership, the Raiders won a number of conference and regional championships, and the 2016 team was state runner-up in Class 2A.
