Along with state elections, the citizens of Appomattox will have local elections to contend with in 2021.

Filing as a candidate began Jan. 2. However, no one has registered yet to run for local offices, according to Patricia Morton, the Appomattox County registrar.

The election is not until Nov. 2, but some paperwork may be due by March 25, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.

This year, there will be a race for Appomattox County School Board in both the Piney Mountain District and the Courthouse District. Currently, the Piney Mountain District school board seat is held by the Rev. Alfred L. Jones III. Gregory A. Smith currently holds the Courthouse District school board seat.

Board of supervisors seats also will be contested for the Piney Mountain District and the Courthouse District. Currently, Watkins M. Abbitt Jr. sits on the Piney Mountain District seat and Chairman Samuel E. Carter has the Courthouse District seat.
