Local man dies hunting

An Appomattox man was killed in a New Year’s Eve hunting accident, according to sources.

Donald "Duck" Lee Lewis succumbed to injuries sustained while hunting with his family on New Year’s Eve. This information was verified after a Times Virginian news correspondent contacted Donald Lewis' wife Terry Lewis and another family member.

The family confirmed that Donald Lewis was accidentally shot and taken to Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, but no additional information was provided at the time.

He leaves behind his wife, three daughters and nine grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Bruce & Stiff Funeral Home in Appomattox. Public viewing will be held from noon until 6 p.m. today, Jan. 7, at the funeral home.

The Virginia Conservation Police and Virginia State Police, as well as Prince Edward Rescue Squad, responded to the scene on Dec. 31.

Attempts to obtain additional information about the incident from the Virginia Conservation Police and Virginia State Police have been unsuccessful as of Tuesday.

The case is still under investigation at this time.
