Penn State grad named Appomattox forester

Norman G. Little, of Farmville, was appointed county forester in Appomattox to replace Donald Drake, who was transferred to Halifax. Little, who had been serving as a forester in Charlotte County, is a graduate of Penn State School of Forestry. He has additional forestry experience in fire control service in California. Both Drake and Little, in speaking of tree growth in Appomattox County, said that the chief concern of the county should be the conversion of low quality hardwood areas to loblolly pine, which is now being carried on by many landowners here and has proved beneficial and profitable to the land and landowners.

Johnny and Linda Gallier of Appomattox experienced the sadness of an empty place at their Christmas dinner table this year and will have the same empty place at New Year’s dinner. Their son, Richard, is in the Navy on the USS Seattle in the Red Sea.

Kidney transplant saves county man

Appomattox County resident George “Bubba” Duff received a kidney transplant after receiving a kidney from his brother, Donald of Mechanicsville. It was Duff’s second transplant attempt — two years earlier a kidney donated by his daughter, Vickie, had failed.

Long-lost sisters reunite with mother

Long-lost sisters Donna Woods and Laura Cloer spent Christmas with their mother, Mary Ann Mann, for the first time in nearly five decades after infant Laura was given up for adoption. Donna, an Appomattox resident, didn’t know she had a younger sister until informed at a funeral. Laura, who grew up in Lynchburg and eventually married and moved to Florida, knew she was adopted but had been unable to locate her birth mother. Donna’s daughter Kimberly realized she knew a nurse who had worked with the doctor who adopted Laura. Donna obtained a phone number of the doctor’s son, made a call and set the wheels of a reunion in motion.

Nurse goes overseas to help tsunami victims

Justine Young, the Director of Nursing at Appomattox Healthcare Center and a Prospect resident, joined 14 other healthcare providers and evangelists to bring relief to the people devastated by a tsunami in India that caused nearly a quarter-million deaths in the region.

Raiders honored with parade, school board honors

A large crowd showed up to celebrate the Appomattox Raiders’ state football championship season with a Victory Parade. The team was also honored by the Appomattox County School Board as Superintendent Dr. Dorinda Grasty proclaimed Dec. 17 to be Raiders Varsity Football Team Day. Each player received a certificate and T-shirt in the high school cafeteria.
