An Appomattox man who gave up his life in service of his country received recognition Thursday when his name was added to the Shrine of Memory – Global War on Terrorism and Beyond at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond.
U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ben Maxwell died in the line of duty during the 1983 terrorist bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut.
Also added to the War Memorial — to the Shrine of Memory for the 20th Century — was US. Army Private First Class Richard J. Harris, who died from a mortar-inflicted wound while serving in the Korean War on Oct. 5, 1951. He was a native of Charlotte County and was drafted while living in Henrico County.
