Initial unemployment claims in the Lynchburg area spiked in the first half of December, according to Virginia Career Works.

There were 274 initial claims filed the week of Dec. 12, preceded by 354 initial claims the week before. Both numbers are significantly higher than the initial claims filed week-to-week during the last three months. Initial claims had dropped to 127 the week of Nov. 28. These numbers are drawn from the city of Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell.

“We hadn’t really seen an uptick in that until a couple of weeks ago,” said Career Works Business Engagement and Outreach Coordinator Tim Saunders about the rise in initial unemployment claims seen in the first half of December.
