Miss Jane Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Martin, was crowned Miss Spout Spring at a Spout Spring P.T.A. Lawn Party. Runner-up was Miss Harriet Carson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Carson. Judy Gayle Morris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Morris, was crowned Little Miss Spout Spring in the Baby Contest. Runner up in the Baby Contest was Patsy McFadden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey McFadden.

New alcohol detectors to aid anti-DUI effort

The Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office received a boost in their anti-drunk driving efforts when Nationwide Insurance Company presented passive alcohol detectors that can detect if a person’s breath or the air inside a car contain alcohol.

Residents differ on ‘story of the century’

The 20th century was filled with many marvels and tragedies, almost beyond comprehension. Appomattox residents offered a wide variety of opinions on the question of what was the century’s biggest story. The 1969 moon landing received the most votes, largely because travel to the moon was previously assumed to be impossible. Others receiving significant votes were the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, President Nixon’s visit to China in 1972, the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, and the developments of the atomic bomb, penicillin, flight, mass-produced automobiles, assembly lines and computers.

New school business director hired

Stephen Edwards was hired as the new Director of Business for the Appomattox County school division, replacing William Perrow who retired from the division after 40 years.

Town buys playground stuff for park

The Town of Appomattox purchased equipment for upgrades to the “Kiddie Park” on Hunter Street, including play equipment for various ages, a swing set, a pavilion, grills, benches, picnic tables and trash receptacles.
