The Virginia State Police Appomattox Division had 14 disabled vehicles and 45 traffic crashes to respond to between midnight and 9 p.m. Saturday due to an ice storm.
The Virginia State Police had discouraged Virginians from driving through Sunday, Feb. 14, due to icy and treacherous conditions and the increased potential for fallen trees, power lines, etc., across much of Central, Southeastern, and Northern Virginia.
At 9 p.m. Saturday, Virginia State Police were on the scene of 29 traffic crashes statewide and five disabled vehicles statewide. The majority of those crashes involve only damage to vehicles, as vehicles slide off the slick roadways into ditches, guardrails and fallen trees.
From midnight Saturday through 9 p.m. Saturday, Virginia State Police had responded to a total of 195 disabled vehicles and 366 traffic crashes statewide. Still, no fatal crashes were reported at the time.
