The Appomattox community has grieved the sudden passing of dentist, councilman and former mayor Dr. Paul Harvey. His death has left a vacancy on the town council, and it needs to be filled.

Town Clerk Roxanne Casto reported to the council that to fill the vacant position, the town would file with the county and advertise the vacancy in the Times Virginian. The deadline for applying will be 4:30 p.m. Nov. 14.

The seat must be filled within 45 days, which falls on Dec. 2. The council can review the applications in a closed session at its Nov. 24 work session, Casto noted. The application is available online at the town’s website and at the town office.

In its Oct. 27 workshop meeting, the town council—along with the Appomattox Town Planning Commission—held a pair of joint public hearings. Neither application request drew any opposition speakers at the hearing.
