Mach 1 Raceway, owned and operated by father-daughter duo BJ and Catherine Carter, moved into a new space at the Triangle Plaza Shopping Center last month. Behind the glass storefront, this family has created not only an intriguing and engaging new hobby space for Appomattox but a tight-knit and supportive community of their own. And what's more, they want more than anything to share it with the rest of Virginia.
For BJ and Catherine Carter, slot car racing is firstly and foremostly about their bond as father and daughter.
“Five years ago I took Catherine to a slot car raceway, and she got hooked,” BJ said. “We became friends with a guy who had an old track in his garage, and we’d go over there and run weekly races. That’s where Catherine won her first novice race.”
This sentimental racetrack on which Catherine won her first race sits proudly at the front of Mach 1 Raceway, a sentimental reminder of how far the family has come from garage races.
