It’s the time of the season…for Raiders Fall Sports

The 2024 fall sports scene at Appomattox County High School presents its share of intrigue as one team attempts to defend its state crown, two teams begin with new coaches, and another team carries on a traditional expectation of success under the direction of its long-time leader.

RAIDERS VOLLEYBALL: REIGNING STATE CHAMPS

The Appomattox Raiders volleyball team won the school’s first-ever state championship in 2023 by overcoming a 2-0 deficit to defeat Bruton in five sets and take home the VHSL Class 2 trophy.

Last year’s senior leaders, setter Aubrey Fulcher and frontline hitter Shannon Coleman, are now graduated but head coach Mark Drinkard is confident in the 2024 squad’s ability to once again compete at a high level.

“We are proud of last year’s state championship but this is a new year,” Drinkard said. “We don’t expect to win because of that; we only expect it to be difficult and do all the things we did last year to make it possible. This is the most talented team we have had (roster spots) 1-12, so if we work hard, trust and believe in each other, we have a great opportunity.”
