The defending Class 2 state champion Appomattox Raiders volleyball team opened defense of their title last week with victories over Amherst and Buckingham. The Raiders swept the Amherst Lancers on the road Aug. 27 in three sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-23) and the Buckingham Knights at home Aug. 29 (25-10, 25-20, 25-23).
The Raiders dominated the first set against the Knights but the remainder of the match was a back-and-forth battle with multiple lead changes.
Appomattox hosts a rematch with Amherst tonight. Junior varsity begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity match.
