The Buckingham Knights won the annual “Battle of the Axe” matchup against the Appomattox Raiders 35-13 in the season’s opening week varsity football game Friday night at Bragg Stadium.

On the game’s first possession, Buckingham marched down the field on a 5-minute 40-second, 75-yard scoring drive consisting of all running plays that ended on a 3-yard run by Anthony Beam for a 7-0 lead.

Buckingham linebacker Trenton Ragland sacked Appomattox quarterback Reagan Conroy on the Raiders’ first possession. The ensuing punt snap was high, and the Knights recovered the ball at the Raiders’ 1-yard line. Running back William Motley followed with the first of his three touchdown runs for a 14-0 lead.

Conroy quickly put the Raiders back in business when he burst through the line for a lengthy touchdown run to narrow the deficit to 14-7 with 3:10 remaining in the first quarter.
