Rev. Alfred Jones III submitted his resignation to the Appomattox County School Board during this evening's scheduled monthly business meeting. The resignation is effective immediately.
Jones has served on the School Board, representing the Piney Mountain District, since Jan. 1, 2014, according to the Appomattox County High School website. His current term was set to expire on Dec. 31.
Jones did not elaborate on the reasons for his resignation, but cited the COVID-19 pandemic and the Dec. 17, 2020, passing of his wife of 40 years, Judy Faye Davis Jones, who succumbed to cancer.
ACHS Division Superintendent Dr. Annette Bennett said the School Board has 45 days to fill the vacancy on an interim basis until elections are held later this year. The person who fills the interim seat may run again in the upcoming election.
On Thursday, May 13, the School Board will be accepting official nominations. On Thursday, May 27, interviews for the interim vacancy will be conducted. Both meetings take place at 5 p.m. at the School Administration Building on Court Street in Appomattox.

Nominations may also be mailed to: School Administration Building, 316 Court St., Appomattox, VA 24522. Nominations may be self-made or made for someone else.
