Appomattox County Sheriff Donald Simpson requested the addition of one more full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) when he appeared before the Appomattox County Board of Supervisors at their Oct. 16 meeting.
The Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office (APSO) applied for and received one of the state SRO position grants, an award that amounts to $46,068 and accounts for 75 percent of the school year, according to Simpson. The current grant year runs from Oct. 1 through June 30, 2023.
Full-time SROs are deployed at all four public schools in Appomattox County with several part-timers helping as well. But Simpson said there are a few caveats involved with the additional position at the high school if it’s something the county would like to pursue.
