The Appomattox Raiders volleyball team is rolling through its opponents at the start of the season with a 5-0 record after recent wins over Randolph-Henry on the road (25-14, 25-5, 25-12) and Mecklenburg County at home (25-22, 25-21, 25-10).
The Mecklenburg Phoenix gave the Raiders their toughest competition so far, dominating the early portion of set one Monday night and jumping out to a 7-2 lead behind a strong passing game and stellar defense led by libero Elena Bailey, who was a defensive force the entire match.
Appomattox had to regroup and battle back but finally tied the score at 15-15 on a blocked shot by Kaydence Gilbert. The Raiders then went up 16-15 when a Phoenix shot went out of bounds.
