The 2022 season flashed before the eyes of the Appomattox Raiders late in the fourth quarter Friday night as Jackson Swanson of Glenvar fielded a Raider punt and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown that was supposed to have given the Highlanders a 40-38 lead (before the extra point attempt) in the Region 2C Championship game. However, Raider Nation breathed a collective sigh of relief when a flag was thrown against Glenvar for an illegal block, which nullified the touchdown.
Still in possession of the ball at the Appomattox 43-yard line, Glenvar freshman quarterback Joshua Dawyot connected with wide receiver Nicholas Woodson on a 3rd-and-5 pass that placed the Highlanders at the 29-yard line.
Dawyot rifled the next pass up the middle to Gabriel Ford, who dropped the ball with open space in front of him. On 3rd-and-10 with time ticking away, Dawyot scrambled right on a rollout and threw the ball toward the end zone but Jonathan Pennix intercepted the pass with eight seconds left to play to seal the championship for Appomattox.
The win was the fourth straight regional championship for the Raiders, who begin their quest for a sixth Class 2 championship Saturday, Dec. 3 when they travel to Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield to face the undefeated (13-0) Graham G-Men, winners of the Region 2D Championship with a 56-35 win over Ridgeview. Appomattox’s overall record is 10-3.
Tickets for the Class 2 State Semifinal game are only available on the GoFan website. Tickets cannot be purchased by cash at the gate. Tickets are $10 plus a $1.50 convenience charge. Children age six under attend free.
