After 51 years, Johnson retires

Velma Johnson, longtime school transportation employee, opens up gifts at a surprise retirement party recently.

Velma Johnson is no stranger to the Appomattox County Schools’ transportation department. Having begun at the department as a bus driver in 1968 at 24 years old, Johnson knows the ins and outs of the department like few others.

She retired on Friday, having held the title and weight of transportation assistant. Seeing the children of Appomattox County arrive to and from school safety was part of her job for 51 years.

“Her shoes are gonna be hard to fill. She’s got so much knowledge of the county, of the people. That doesn’t come overnight,” said Transportation Supervisor Matt Lair at Johnson’s surprise retirement party. “She knows the roads; she knows the laws. And she’s really gonna be missed, but she says it’s time.”
