Today all schools in Appomattox County are under what is called a soft or modified lockdown, meaning that students are not permitted to go outside but are allowed to conduct business as usual inside the school.
The Appomattox County Sheriff's Office, according to Major Donald Simpson, is working in coordination with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office on a search for an individual in the area. No further details were given about the search because the investigation is still ongoing.
Appomattox County Public Schools Superintendent Annette Bennett said she ordered a modified lockdown for all public schools in the district but that there are no threats to any of those schools.
Bennett also said she doesn't anticipate any interruption to the daily operating schedule unless she receives word otherwise from law enforcement authorities.
According to Simpson, Cornerstone Christian Academy is under a similar lockdown.
Appomattox Christian Academy is also under a soft lockdown. Dean of Students Julia Vaughan said students will not be going outdoors. Classroom doors are locked and surveillance cameras are monitoring the property.
