By a narrow 3-2 margin, the Appomattox County Board of Supervisors approved a one-time $1,000 bonus on Monday, March 21, for employees of the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office, the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office and Social Services.
Appomattox County Administrator Susan Adams said that the total approved bonuses will amount to $30,000.
The board considered the proposed ordinance to include all county employees in the IRS definition, pursuant to Virginia Code 15.2-1508 titled, “Bonuses for employees of local governments,” that states, “Notwithstanding any contrary provision of law, general or special, the governing body of any locality may provide for payment of monetary bonuses to its officers and employees. The payment of a bonus shall be authorized by ordinance.”
In late 2021, the board discussed providing $1,000 bonuses to county employees to help offset cost of living expenses brought on by inflation and the COVID-19 pandemic.
