Except for some light wind, the weather on this Good Friday is nearly perfect but today turned out not-so-good in several instances as a brush fire and several motor vehicle accidents have occurred in Appomattox County. The good news is that no injuries were reported in at least two of the incidents.
Shortly after 3 p.m. the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) was called to a brush fire on Hummingbird Lane, Spout Spring. The fire damaged two wooded acres.
Appomattox County Fire Chief Jonathan Garrett said the fire was started by a controlled burn. The Virginia Department of Forestry is investigating the fire, and Virginian's 4 PM Burning Law is still in effect until April 30. The law bans open-air fires before 4 p.m. with a few exemptions. Those regulations may be read on the Virginia Department of Forestry website here.
Fred Godsey of AVFD said there was an outbuilding that had been threatened by the fire but firefighters were able to control the burn before it reached the structure.
Arriving on scene was AFVD as well as various emergency personnel from Campbell County, Concord and the Virginia Department of Forestry.
As fire crews were attending to the brush fire, a call came over the emergency radio about a three-vehicle accident at the corner of Purdum Mill Road and Church Street in Appomattox.
There were no injuries reported and only the vehicles -- a silver van, white Honda SUV and tan Chevy SUV -- sustained minor damage. The incident is under investigation by Virginia State Police. AFVD also arrived at the scene.
Earlier in the day, around 1:30 p.m., a pickup truck struck a tree in the vicinity of Red House Road. Garrett reported that one person was treated and transported by ambulance for minor injuries.
Moments before this report was about to be published, two more calls came across the emergency scanner for separate brush fires -- one in a wooded area of Green Acres Lane 100 feet from a structure, and the other somewhere in the area of what sounds like Porter House Road.
