The Appomattox Raiders softball team continued on a victorious path over the weekend by winning the Brookville High School Invitational in Lynchburg, improving their record to 7-0.
On Saturday morning, the Raiders downed the host Brookville Bees by the score of 7-3, and came back Sunday to defeat the Halifax Comets 8-3.
Raiders pitcher Courtney Layne was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Macee Hargis and Kelsey Hackett were named to the AllTournament Team.
Appomattox, a Class 2 team in the Dogwood District, overcame two teams from higher class districts — Brookville is a Class 3 team in the Seminole District, and Halifax is a Class 4 team in the Piedmont District.
Against Brookville, the Raiders put up all of their runs in the second (4) and sixth (3) innings. The Bees were behind 7-1 before adding two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Layne pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs and firing 18 strikeouts.
Appomattox recorded 12 base hits, two each from Hargis, Layne, Emily Purcell and Kenadee McCullough. Layne, Abby Wilkerson and Carrington Moore each hit a double.
In Sunday’s game against Halifax, the Raiders were powered by Hargis’ two home runs and one homer by Hackett.
Hargis and Hackett each had two base hits, as well as Layne and Purcell. Hargis led the Raiders with four RBI. Hackett recorded two stolen bases.
Layne pitched another complete game, allowing three base hits and striking out 10 batters.
On deck for Appomattox is a 5:30 p.m. road game tonight at Dan River.
