Major Robbie Richardson, a 17-year veteran officer of the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office, has announced his bid to run for the position of sheriff in the upcoming November election.
Current Appomattox County Sheriff Donnie Simpson announced Jan. 17 that he will not be seeking re-election after serving one four-year term.
Richardson, running as an Independent, has received an official endorsement from Appomattox County Commonwealth’s Attorney Les Fleet.
A lifelong Appomattox native, 39-year-old Richardson graduated from Appomattox County High School and received a criminal justice degree from Radford University. After graduating from the Police Academy, he worked three years as a Road Deputy in Appomattox before receiving a promotion to the Central Virginia Drug Task Force for the FBI and Virginia State Police, where he worked for five years. He then became a general investigator for violent crimes within the county, was promoted to Investigations Lieutenant, and has been Chief Deputy since 2020.
