“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by suicide,” stated Appomattox social worker Jane Thomas Allen. “In Appomattox County alone, we have had a youth all the way up to an 86-year-old” who have taken their own lives. She pointed out that it doesn’t matter the person’s race, social status or financial bracket; suicide impacts all categories of people.
Allen, along with Cindy Miller and Kelly McConnell, have organized an event to remember those who are gone, support those who are left behind, and encourage those who struggle. “Still Breathing: a Walk for Those Who Have Survived and for Those Who Are Healing” will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. at Courtland Festival Park on Court Street in Appomattox.
