Sunday designated as War Fund Day in Appomattox County

Sunday, Oct. 7, 1945, was designated as War Fund Day in Appomattox County, as was announced by county War Fund Chairman W.M. Abbitt. Every church in the county was asked to present the matter to their congregation and take up a War Fund collection on this day. Every person in the county was asked to make a donation. Even though the actual World War II fighting had ended, there was a greater need than ever before. The county quota was $3,600.

Champion Abyssinian cat raised in county

Para-el Cattery at Three Springs Farm, owned and operated by Ellie and Richard Rock, breed and raise Abyssinian cats. One of those cats, named Pretty and Blue, earned the title of National Master Grand Champion.

Appomattox area acquires SWAT team, of sorts

The Appomattox area finally acquired a SWAT team, but not the type associated with fighting crime. SWAT is a Christian youth fellowship group named in keeping with their theme in the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19, 20.

Town says no to gun discharges

The Appomattox Town Council voted to not amend a code that would allow the shooting of firearms within the town’s corporate limits despite several people wanting to amend the code because of issues with squirrels.
