Virginia ranks 11th in ratio of farms having electricity

Virginia stands with Indiana in 11th place in the nation in the percentage of farms with electric service. A report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows the percentage of electrified farms in Virginia is well above the national average — 97 percent as compared to 92.3 percent. The number of Virginia farms with electricity has more than doubled in less than 10 years.

Scruggs wins Tiny Miss pageant

Two-year-old Ashley Dawn Scruggs won trophies as she was named as Tiny Miss Baby Doll Appomattox. The pageant was held at the Appomattox Community Center. Ashley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Scruggs of Dillwyn.

Local youngsters compete on skates

Several local youngsters participated in the Virginia Special Olympics Roller Skating Competition in Roanoke. Mitchell Glover, Bryan Henderson, Trina Jamerson and Angela Moore all won first-place medals in relay or slalom events.

Local Habitat for Humanity builds first home

Appomattox County’s Habitat for Humanity began building a home near Evergreen for its first recipients, Terry Drennan and her four children. Habitat had raised the $35,000 needed for materials through donations.

Students injured when truck strikes school bus

A tractor trailer crashed into the rear of an Appomattox County school bus, sending three children to the hospital with minor injuries. The accident occurred on Highway 460 West, east of Pamplin Exxon.
