The Appomattox Raiders baseball team's quest for a repeat state championship came to and end Thursday night with a 5-1 home loss to Nelson County in a Region 2C quarterfinal matchup.

The Raiders tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning on a base hit by Evan Carwile that drove in Trey Shrock. However, the Raiders were unable to get the bats going as Nelson added four runs to secure the win.

Appomattox finishes the season with a 14-5 record.

The end of the 2023 season marks the end of an era for several seniors who were part of the Raiders' 2022 state championship team. The bond between the players and coaches was evident by the outpouring of emotions and hugs after the loss.
