On Monday, the Appomattox AAA Minors baseball team shutout Halifax 7-0 in the fourth round of the 2024 Virginia DYB State Tournament held at Appomattox County Community Park.
Appomattox advances to play Goochland tonight at 6 p.m. Results will be in next week’s Times Virginian. The winner plays in the championship Wednesday. Halifax was eliminated from the tournament.
Appomattox got off to a quick start against Halifax, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Layton Ferguson led off with a single and scored on a base hit by Malachi Thomas when Halifax committed an error on the play. Thomas then scored from third base on another infield error on a hit by Cullen Harris.
Harris advanced to third base on a wild pitch but was thrown out at home plate attempting to score on a second wild pitch. However, Jackson Gobble doubled and later scored on an infield error on a grounder by Landon Maddox.
Note: Appomattox Ozone plays Halifax Ozone tonight at 7 p.m. If Halifax wins, they will be the state champions. If Appomattox wins, they play Wednesday in the championship game.
