A bright yellow sign, with red text that read “Store Closing Sale” drew the attention of customers who entered the Peebles store in The Shoppes of Appomattox Shopping Center on Richmond Highway.
The Peebles store will be undergoing a makeover as signage will soon read “Gordmans” instead of “Peebles.”
As customers went through the check out on Thursday, curious women asked about the stores’ closing. A store associate was overheard stating that the store will be closed for 8 days and then reopen as Gordmans.
Gordmans specializes in off-price clothing and household merchandise.
Both Gordmans and Peebles are two of several store chains owned by Stage Stores, Inc..
Peebles stores are predominantly located in the eastern and upper-midwestern portions of the United States. Peebles was founded in the 1981. It became part of the Stage Stores family in 2003.
According to www.fundinguniverse.com, Peebles is described as "one of the oldest and most successful department store chains in the United States." It began in 1891 as Peebles and Green clothing store in Lawrenceville, Virginia.
More information was sought by the Times Virginian, but a store employee referred the questions to corporate headquarters. An updated article will be in next week’s edition of the Times Virginian.
